Tween High Fantasy / YA
Date Published: September 24, 2018

Royal twins ripped apart at birth become reluctant champions of good and evil.

Kylie, a teenage science geek, has no faith in people. Instead, she relies on what she trusts the most, the facts––what she can see, touch, and hear but never feel. With enough pain to deal with in her own world, she is thrust into another––a kingdom at war whose strange inhabitants fear one thing the most––the return of the dragon.  All of this is illogical to Kylie, but even more so, when she discovers she belongs there.

Her brother, Prince Jarlon, journeys to kill the dragon who has laid waste to his kingdom.  His only hope for destroying the beast is help from his sister, whom he has never met. Will their paths cross before the beast’s malevolence infects Kylie and turns her into his creature or will Jarlon have to destroy her, too?

A Little Bit of Q&A

Do you read and reply to the reviews and comments of your readers?
I try to reply to all comments and reviews on blog posts. Without readers my books are nothing ☺  However, I don’t comment on reviews at other sites like Amazon.

Does a bad review affect your writing?
A bad review can be discouraging. If the book has also received many positive reviews, then I try not to let it get me down. If a get a bunch of bad reviews then uh oh, then maybe I need to work on my craft.

Any advice you would like to give to your younger self?
I’d tell myself to prioritize kindness above edginess when picking my friends and partners. That seems obvious. However, when I was younger, I hadn’t yet realized the “bad boy” is only a fun option in a romance novel and not in life.

Any advice you would like to give to aspiring writers?
Read many books, fiction and non-fiction, literary and commercial genres. They all can open possibilities and ways of dreaming. In addition, take writing craft classes. I still take courses or read books to improve my writing.

What did you want to become when you were a kid?
I wanted to be an actress. My parents were working actors (not famous). They introduced me to it at an early age. I loved performing everything from Shakespeare to improvisation. I pursued it for several years and got professional jobs. However, I did not like the business aspect of the field so I turned my sights to something much easier—I became an attorney ☺

Do you recall the first ever book/novel you read?
Does Hop of Pop by Dr. Seuss count? If so, then it was my first book. The first novel I read on my own was The Phantom Tollbooth. I still love that book.

Which book inspired you to begin writing?
When I was young, my mother read Little Women to my sister and me. I remember wishing to be a writer just like Jo.

Did you ever think you would be unable to finish your first novel?
Many times. Dragon’s Shadow is in fact the first book I wrote. I could not sell an earlier version of the book. So for several years it gathered dust in a file while I pursued other stories. Last year, I returned to Dragon, revised it and now it is published! Hooray!

Do you read any of your own work?
Before a book is completed, I have read and re-read it a dozen times during the revision process so you’d think I’d never want to read it again. Yet, I confess, I will occasionally look back and visit passages, or certain characters of my older work.

Tell us about your writing style, how is it different from other writers?
More than style, content is the unique element of my work. As is true for all writers, personal experience informs the work––-even when the story takes place in a land with magic and dragons.

Title: DEL TORO MOON
Author: Darby Karchut
Pub. Date: October 2, 2018
Publisher: Owl Hollow Press
Formats: Paperback, eBook
Pages: 224
Find it: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N, TBD

“Ride hard, swing hard, and take out as many of those creepy critters as you can.”
Twelve year old Matt Del Toro is the greenest greenhorn in his family’s centuries-old business: riding down and destroying wolf-like monsters, known as skinners. Now, with those creatures multiplying, both in number and ferocity, Matt must saddle up and match his father’s skills at monster whacking. Odds of doing that? Yeah, about a trillion to one. Because Matt’s father is the legendary Javier Del Toro—hunter, scholar, and a true caballero: a gentleman of the horse.
Luckily, Matt has twelve hundred pounds of backup in his best friend—El Cid, an Andalusian war stallion with the ability of human speech, more fighting savvy than a medieval knight, and a heart as big and steadfast as the Rocky Mountains.
Serious horse power.
Those skinners don’t stand a chance.

Excerpt

Eyes white-rimmed with battle rage, Turk gained on us with every stride of his powerful legs. Dad rode low in the saddle, mace at the ready and head turned, watching the pursuit. A tiny corner of my mind marveled that he hadn’t lost his hat.

Half hidden in Turk’s dust, the three remaining skinners raced after us, strings of venom and saliva flying from their open mouths. One creature dragged a hind leg that was mostly a splintered stick. Chunks of meat clung to it. Even as I watched, the leg grew back. The skinner gave a yip of delight and picked up its pace.
With a surge, Turk caught us. I glanced over. My father’s jaw was clenched and his lips were pressed in a thin line. “How bad?” I yelled. “Did it—”
“Matt, no matter what,” Dad shouted, “you stay on El Cid.”
I crouched lower, rocking forward and back in rhythm with his stride. My ankles and knees flexed with each jolt of the stallion’s stride, working like shock absorbers. All the while, I forced myself to stay relaxed, my weapon at the ready.
Just the way Dad had taught me and Ben. The way his father had taught him and his brother and sister. And his father before that. Generation after generation. All the way back to our legendary ancestor.
Four centuries ago, Santiago Del Toro had stepped off that frigate and waded ashore to this New World, a magic-enhanced mace in one hand and his Andalusian war-brother by his side. Spain in his wake and a vow to keep.
The thunder of hooves bounced off the valley walls. The echoes grew louder. Or was it my pulse thundering in my ears? Ahead of us, at the top of a short incline, the mouth of the Gate loomed. I could feel El Cid’s ribs heaving as he pounded up the slope.
Behind us, the skinners yelped, eager to munch on manflesh or horseflesh. Or boyflesh. I thought of what would happen if those monsters caught me. What their teeth would do to me. What it would feel like to be eaten alive.
Stop it. Don’t think about it. Just ride. I leaned forward and stretched out along El Cid’s neck, practically burying myself in his mane.
“Fear not, Matt,” El Cid panted between words. “No demon-spawned skinner has ever outrun an Andalusian.”
Man, I sure hoped that wasn’t just bragging on his part. I swore I felt the hot breath of the skinners on my neck.

The Journal of Angela Ashby
Liana Gardner
Published by: Vesuvian Books
Publication date: September 25th 2018
Genres: Middle-Grade, Paranormal
A Middle Grade “Death Note”
“With great power comes great responsibility.” ~Voltaire
I have great power.
That’s what she told me. The old fortune-teller at the school carnival.
I thought I was doing the right thing … with the magic journal she gave me. But nothing could prepare me for what happened next.
Or, for what I unleashed.

At a school carnival, a mysterious fortune-teller gives twelve-year-old Angela Ashby a journal and warns her to use it wisely. Nothing prepares Angela for the journal’s power—when she pours her heart onto its pages her desires come true.
She tests the journal by conjuring a gnome, a unicorn, and a farting fairy and then uses it to stop the school bullies in their tracks. But the unintended consequences alienate her best friend and puts her favorite teacher in danger of losing her job.
After she shares her deepest desire of all—that her parents get back together—her adversary steals the journal, and Angela fears she will use it to bring mayhem to the entire school if she doesn’t get it back.

EXCERPT:
In the middle of the layout the Ace of Spades drew me in. Smoke from the candles created a foggy layer and the image wavered and morphed into a winged hooded figure carrying a scythe through a graveyard. The angel of death. I blinked and ran a hand over my eyes. Once I lowered my hand, the card showed the black spade and letter ‘A’. Nothing else. Not even a gravestone.
I didn’t imagine it. Or maybe it would be better if I had. I gazed back at Madame Vadoma.
“You will gain power beyond your wildest imaginings and need to use it wisely.”
Yeah, right. What twelve-year-old ever had power? We were back to the usual phony reading. I settled back into my chair to wait for the line about the dark stranger.
Madame Vadoma narrowed her eyes. “Young lady, this is not trick done for amusement. I give you caution. You would be wise to pay heed.”
Was she reading my mind?
“You have struggles ahead as you learn to use your power. Temptation will beckon and you will want to use it for ill. You must resist. Down the path of ill-will lies destruction.”
Weren’t these things supposed to be light, fluffy readings about finding love and fortune? Ill-will and destruction were not supposed to be part of the deal.
Her amber eyes bore into mine. “You have choices to make about the power of your heart. Casual choice makes trouble. Be cautious with desires. The right choices will lead you to happiness and fulfillment.”
A shiver ran through my body and goose pimples dotted my arms. The words sounded like the usual trickery. Besides, I could hear the same lecture from my mom. Make the wrong choices and you get in trouble. Make the right choices and you’ll be happy. Big deal.
So why were the hairs standing on my arms?
Madame Vadoma grabbed a thin leather book lying on the table beside her. She ran her hands over the cover and mumbled words I didn’t understand. Her claw-like hands grasped the book as she stared at me. Her gaze penetrated my soul and as much as I wanted to, I couldn’t look away.
Her eyes widened at something behind me. With one hand she clutched the book closer to her body, then blew twice in rapid succession on the fingertips of her other hand. Tingles ran down my spine and I snapped my head around to look over my shoulder. Nothing was there. Creepy.
She closed her eyes and the tensions drained from her arms and shoulders. Taking a deep breath, her lids fluttered open and she met my gaze. Madame Vadoma grunted and gave a nod, which sent her hoops swinging. “I give you this. It is for you to write what is in your heart.” She handed me the book. “Remember your heart has power. Use it wisely.” She stood. “Keep your heart pure, and you will do no harm.”
Things were getting a little too freaky. Hugging the book to my chest, I shot out of my seat. “Um, thanks for the reading.”
Backing up a few steps, I turned and bolted through the curtain.
