When a deadly virus decimates the majority of Earth's population, 16-year-old Sawyer Bradshaw finds he is both immune and alone in a world that has descended into violent chaos. Armed with only his estranged father's shotgun, and an unrelenting desire to stay alive, Sawyer discovers that he not only has an uncanny knack for cheating death, but also for taking lives. Still, it is not long before he meets his match in a fierce and cunning teenage girl named Sara and by her side Sawyer emerges as more than just a natural-born killer, but also as a leader among men. Nevertheless, as quick as the young survivors fall desperately in love, they find themselves caught up in a series of conspiracies and twisted struggles for power, and they soon realize that more often than not, love, betrayal, and death, tend to walk hand in hand.

How hard was it to sit down and actually start writing something?
For me, it was always about finding the time to write, not so much the motivation to actually sit down and start writing. I absolutely love the process of crafting a story, but to be able to dedicate a decent block of time every day to writing can be hard. I basically chose to stop watching so much television each night and dedicated that time to writing instead. I’ve said it before--every minute you’re binge watching the next must-see, you’re not writing the next best-seller.

Do you aim to complete a set number of pages or words each day?
Not really, but it all depends. Some days I might write whole chapters or more in a few hours of time, other days it doesn’t come as easy, or I simply don’t have the time to write at all. The key is keep going back until the story is done, even if you take a break at some point.

Writers are often associated with loner tendencies; is there any truth to that?
I think there might be some truth to that. I’m actually pretty outgoing and social, but I enjoy being alone as well, and especially when I’m writing.

Do you think writers have a normal life like others?
I’m not sure what “normal” really means anymore, and I can’t speak for anyone else, but my life feels relatively normal at this early point in my career. But, I’m guessing that mega-popular authors like J.K. Rowling aren’t living what most of us would call a typical life.

Do you set a plot or prefer going wherever an idea takes you?
Both. There’s nothing like letting the story develop one key-stroke at a time, I love that more than anything, but having your story plotted out is key to tying it all together.

What, according to you, is the hardest thing about writing?
Finding the time to write is the hardest thing. At some point, it’s a trade off, but if you want to be a successful writer you have to put in the hours. Unfortunately, books don’t write themselves, and good writing is a time-intensive process without any shortcuts.

What would you say is the easiest aspect of writing?
I’m not sure that there is anything “easy” about writing, because it does take some measure of skill, but for me, it feels very natural when I’m in the process of crafting a story or developing a plot line. I guess the easiest part is simply writing the story, the hard part comes after the first draft.

Have you ever experienced “Writer’s Block”? How long do they usually last?
Not very often actually, but there have been many times where I have re-written the same paragraph literally dozens of times only to delete the whole thing and start over again the next day. However, usually once I sit down and start the writing process, I’m fortunate that I’m able to focus and get down to business without much of a problem.

Any tips you would like to share to overcome it?
My best tip would be to get in a routine where you are writing in a quiet place, without distractions, for a block of time each day. If you can make that happen, you’ve got a huge advantage from the start.

Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?
Yes. I read quite bit and usually have at least two books going at a time. I think if you want to be a good writer, you absolutely have to read as well, and I’m no exception. Right now, I’m reading a book about the life of Genghis Khan, and I’m also on the last of the Song of Fire and Ice series (Game of Thrones), A Dance with Dragons, by George R.R. Martin. Martin is an amazing writer, but my all-time favorite authors are probably Jack London, Steinbeck, and Cormac McCarthy.
